A new era for Nigeria's bioeconomy
The Minna Declaration 2026 emanates from the 38th International Annual Scientific Conference of the Biotechnology Society of Nigeria, held under the theme “Advancing Safe Biotechnology for Sustainable Wealth Creation.”
The Conference brought together scientists, researchers, academics, biotechnology professionals, policymakers, regulators, industry representatives, development partners, students and other stakeholders to deliberate on biotechnology's role in Nigeria's sustainable development and economic transformation.
The presentation of 126 scientific abstracts—spanning nutrition and food biotechnology, bacterial bio-stimulation and bioremediation, environmental biotechnology, indigenous plants as alternative biological agents, and related life sciences—demonstrated significant scientific capacity and innovative potential.
The Declaration emphasizes that the value of research must extend beyond abstracts, publications and laboratory discoveries. Scientific knowledge should increasingly become solutions, technologies, products, enterprises, industries, jobs and prosperity. It therefore advances “From Bench to Bioeconomy” as a central pathway for Nigeria's biotechnology development.
This transition requires research that is problem-driven, demand-driven and shaped through meaningful engagement with farmers, communities, industries, healthcare providers, businesses, policymakers, regulators and other users of biotechnology.
The Conference identifies biotechnology as a strategic instrument for national transformation, food and nutrition security, healthcare, environmental protection, industrial development and employment. It also recognizes the convergence of artificial intelligence, synthetic biology and biomanufacturing: AI strengthens prediction, synthetic biology expands design, governance enables safety and responsibility, and biomanufacturing turns designs into products.
Nigeria must develop capability across the entire pathway to become a developer, owner, manufacturer and exporter—not merely a consumer—of biotechnology products, technologies and services. This requires increased investment in infrastructure, people, research, intellectual property, technology transfer, entrepreneurship, scale-up and manufacturing.
Safe biotechnology is not an obstacle to innovation. Effective biosafety protects human health, biodiversity and the environment while building confidence and enabling responsible commercialization.
